Peritoneal dialysis is a kidney failure treatment that filters the blood inside your body using the lining of your abdomen, or belly. The peritoneum is the medical term for this lining. A surgeon installs a delicate tube called a catheter in your abdomen a few weeks before you start peritoneal dialysis. When you first start dialysis, water with salt and other additions flow from a bag into your abdomen through a catheter.
