Acute kidney injury is when your kidneys suddenly stop functioning normally (AKI). From a slight decline in kidney function to complete kidney failure, it can have various effects. AKI typically manifests as a complication of another severe illness. Contrary to what the name might imply, it is not brought on by a kidney injury. This type of kidney damage is typically present in older people who also have other illnesses and damaged kidneys. Rapid diagnosis and treatment of AKI are essential. Without prompt treatment, abnormal salt and chemical concentrations can build up in the body, affecting the operation of other organs. AKI symptoms include nausea or vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst, decreased urination, confusion, and sleepiness. Complete kidney failure may call for short-term assistance from a dialysis machine or result in death. Even if AKI does not progress to kidney failure, it still needs to be taken seriously. It affects how the body functions as a whole, changes how some medications are processed by the body, and might make some pre-existing conditions worse. AKI is different from chronic kidney disease, in which the kidneys gradually lose function over time. The best way to treat your AKI will depend on its severity and its underlying cause. You might need to drink more water and other liquids if you have an infection or are dehydrated. If your bladder is blocked, you might require a urinary catheter, a thin tube used to drain the bladder, and you might need to go to the hospital for some treatments. Some AKI patients do go on to develop chronic kidney disease or long-term kidney failure, even though the majority of them fully recover. In extreme circumstances, dialysis—in which the blood is filtered by a machine to remove harmful waste, excess salt, and water from the body—might be necessary.
