Peritoneal dialysis is a kidney failure treatment that uses the lining of your abdomen, also referred to as your belly, to filter the blood inside of your body. The peritoneum is the term used in medicine to describe this lining. An abdominal catheter is inserted by a surgeon a few weeks before you start peritoneal dialysis. A catheter is put into your abdomen when you start treatment, allowing a bag of dialysis solution—water with salt and other additives—to pass through. When the bag is empty, you remove it and put a cap over your catheter so that you can carry on with your regular activities. While the dialysis solution is in your stomach, it draws out waste products and extra fluid from your body.
